Flag-waving
Wrapping an argument in patriotism so disagreeing feels disloyal.
In our replies we call it: Uses patriotism
What it means
Flag-waving ties a position to love of country, so anyone who questions it seems unpatriotic. Anthems, flags, soldiers and "real Indians" or "real Americans" appear where the evidence should be.
How to spot it in a Reel
- Patriotic music or imagery over a political claim
- "Real patriots support..."
- Disagreement framed as betrayal
Examples
- A Reel says anyone who questions a defence deal "insults our soldiers".
- A Reel says true patriots must oppose a trade agreement.
Why it doesn't hold up
Patriotic people disagree about policy all the time. Love of country doesn't settle whether a specific decision is right.
What to say back
"Patriots can disagree on this. What are the arguments for and against?"
Questions
Is patriotic content manipulation?
Celebrating your country isn't. It's a trick when patriotism is used to shut down questions about a claim.
