Privacy Policy
Last updated: 30 September 2026
checkthis.chat ("checkthis", "we") is an automated service that checks videos shared with our Instagram account, @checkthis.chat, for signs of misinformation. This policy explains what we collect, why, and your choices. Contact: hello@checkthis.chat.
What we collect
- Messages you send to @checkthis.chat, including shared Reels and posts, their captions, and the media links Instagram provides with them.
- Your Instagram-scoped ID, an identifier Instagram gives us for your account in conversations with us. We do not receive your password.
- Technical data needed to run the service, such as when a message arrived and whether a media link worked.
How we use it
- To analyse the video or post you shared and return a result.
- To operate, secure and improve the service, including measuring its accuracy.
We use your data only to provide the service to you. We do not sell your data and do not use it for advertising or profiling.
Automated processing
checkthis is an automated AI service. Results are produced by software, including AI models provided by third-party services that process data on our behalf under data processing agreements.
Retention
- Media files (the video or image) are deleted right after analysis.
- Analysis results and derived data (for example the verdict, technical checks and fingerprints used to recognise repeat shares) are kept to operate the service and answer repeat shares.
- Inactive accounts and their associated data are deleted after a set period.
Sharing
We share data only with service providers that help us run checkthis (for example hosting, speech-to-text and AI model providers), bound by contracts, and when required by law.
Your choices
You can stop using the service at any time. You can ask us to delete your data as described on our data deletion page. You can also ask what data we hold about you by emailing hello@checkthis.chat.
Children
checkthis is not intended for children under 13, consistent with Instagram's own minimum age.
Changes
We will update this page if our practices change, with a new "last updated" date.
