Oversimplified cause
Pinning a complex outcome on one cause.
In our replies we call it: Blames one cause
What it means
An oversimplified cause explains a complicated result (inflation, unemployment, an election loss, a riot) with a single reason, usually one that suits the creator's side.
How to spot it in a Reel
- "All because of X"
- One villain for a problem with many moving parts
- No mention of other factors, global trends or timing
Examples
- A Reel blames rising fuel prices entirely on one government, ignoring global oil prices.
- A Reel credits one leader alone for an economic recovery that followed a global upswing.
Why it doesn't hold up
Most big outcomes have several causes. One cause might matter, but proving it means accounting for the others.
What to say back
"What else could explain this, and how much did each factor matter?"
Questions
How is this different from scapegoating?
Scapegoating blames a group of people. An oversimplified cause can blame anything: a policy, an event, a person.
