False equivalence
Treating two very different things as if they were the same.
In our replies we call it: Fake comparison
What it means
False equivalence puts two things side by side as equal when they differ hugely in size, intent or evidence: a typo and a fraud, a protest and a riot, one complaint and a pattern of abuse.
How to spot it in a Reel
- "Both are the same" / "no difference"
- Comparisons that ignore numbers or scale
- One small incident set against a large documented one
Examples
- A Reel says a minor procedural error and a large proven scam are "exactly the same".
- A Reel equates a single heckler with a whole organised campaign.
Why it doesn't hold up
Things can share one feature and still differ in everything that matters. Comparisons need the numbers.
What to say back
"Are these really the same size and kind? What are the numbers?"
Questions
What is an example of false equivalence?
