False cause

Claiming one thing caused another only because it came first or happened at the same time.

In our replies we call it: Coincidence = cause

What it means

False cause takes two things that happened close together and says one made the other happen. Protests break out a few months after a trade dispute, so a foreign power must have started them; a policy is announced and prices rise, so the policy caused it. The timing is offered as the proof, and the real causes are never looked at.

How to spot it in a Reel

Examples

Why it doesn't hold up

Two things happening close together doesn't show that one caused the other. A cause needs evidence of the link, not just the timing.

What to say back

"What shows that one caused the other, apart from the timing?"

Questions

What is the difference between false cause and oversimplified cause?

Oversimplified cause takes something with many known causes and blames just one of them. False cause invents a link between two things because of when they happened.
