Viral video shows a newborn naturally born with a moustache?

The viral video of a newborn with a moustache is digitally altered. While newborns can have fine, unpigmented body hair called lanugo, fact-checkers confirm it cannot form a thick, dark adult moustache, and visual glitches in the video indicate the facial hair was added using a digital filter.

The trick: Edited to mislead

It edits a real photo, video or audio so it shows something that didn't happen (known as doctored photo or video).

“A bizarre video showing a newborn baby with what appears to be a prominent moustache has gone viral, leaving social media users surprised and amused.”

The video uses a digital filter to superimpose a moustache onto a real newborn baby.

What we checked

A newborn baby was born with a prominent moustache.“It would not produce a thick, neatly shaped adult moustache like the one in the clip, and no credible medical documentation ties this exact video to such a case.; scene: same”'Already tired of his 9-to-5': Baby born with a moustache becomes internet sensation, video goes viral | Watch

Our read of the video

The video shows a close-up of a newborn infant with dark facial markings above the upper lip resembling a moustache. However, it is impossible to determine from the footage alone whether the appearance is natural facial hair, cosmetic marking, or a digital filter.

An AI assessment from the footage alone; watch the video and judge for yourself.

What the Reel doesn't tell you

The video shows clear signs of digital manipulation, and natural newborn hair cannot form a thick adult moustache.

How it plays you

Exaggerated reach: “Born With A Look That Has Everyone Talking”. It overstates public reaction to make a manipulated viral clip appear to be a major cultural event.
