Agnipath scheme aims to cut pension costs, but 18,300 (not 30,000) exit in first batch?

The Agnipath scheme was designed to curb defense pension spending, but the first batch exit involves 18,300 personnel who are eligible for job quotas. BBC and Economic Times report that the Agnipath scheme was introduced to reduce ballooning defense expenditures on pensions and salaries, which consume over half the defense budget. Exiting personnel do not receive traditional pensions, but Hindustan Times notes that 18,300 soldiers (not 30,000) will exit in the first batch by December 2026. Retiring Agniveers receive a ~₹11.71 lakh Seva Nidhi package and are entitled to 50% reservation in CAPF recruitment as well as state police quotas.
